This just in, ladies! Angela Bassett has announced that she will launch a skincare line devoted specifically to black women. The 57 year old American Horror Story and What’s Love Got to do With It actress looks more like she just turned 40, so this could be a chance to get in on her anti-aging secrets. Bassett teamed up with her longtime doctor and aesthetic specialist Dr. Barbara Sturm to launch the line which is called “Darker Skin Tones by Dr. Barbara Sturm.” The line was officially launched in July and can only be found online or in store at Harrod’s.
The line includes five products: a foam cleanser, an enzyme cleanser, face cream and accompanying créme, and a hyaluronic serum. Apparently, Bassett met the German doctor through a mutual friend a few years ago, and she spoke to her about breakouts and irritations she was experiencing. Basset tried Dr. Sturm’s original line, Dr. Barbara Sturm Skincare Collection, her anti aging core range which includes a face cream, cleanser, facial scrub, eye cream, and serum using the special ingredient purslane. After working with her on her own skin, Bassett and Dr. Sturm decided to team up for a spin-off that would focus more specifically on darker skin tones. After two years of research, the pair was able to create a line of products that would address these special issues.
The skincare collection will focus on issues commonly faced by black women such as inflammation, unevenness, pore size, and hyperpigmentation. The heavy hitter ingredient that has everyone talking is purslane, a natural ingredient that targets inflammation, which Dr. Sturm credits for most of the skin issues of darker skinned women. Bassett herself has been using products with purslane for years, including Dr. Sturm’s original line, and Dr. Sturm notes that it “works against natural programmed cell death.” She adds, “I was always very interested in anti-inflammation. Since African-American, or skin of color, problems [revolve] mainly [around] inflammation that is why I especially took care in this range. It has real ingredients, which are scientifically shown to address inflammation.”
The actress and Dr. Sturm are also hopeful they will work together in the future to create a preventative skincare line for teens to help them establish good skincare habits at a young age. The two added that with preventative treatment in the teens, it could be possible to eliminate some of the problems we face as we age.
